ARTIST BIO
Helen Mandley
Socially engaged art is my main interest. Capturing the everyday.
Past project I was embedded within a group in Kilburn, NW London. They help and support benefit claimants who are facing increasing sanctions and cuts due to the imposed rules relating to benefits and claims for those that are unwaged or sick and disabled.
Whilst regeneration is happening around London, many others are brushed aside in the rush for property developers and the upwardly mobile continue to make money. Being unemployed appears to be a crime if we are to believe some of the mainstream media and the producers of tv series. Much is a frontal attack on those that have worked and need help in the UK.
My interest really is with the hidden, or those that others wish were hidden from society. Even as we go about our daily lives, we see those that we will often wish we could turn a blind eye to.
By capturing the movement, moment, interaction and the feeling that KUWG encounter weekly at meetings and outside jobcentres and social housing offices, my methods allow me to get a sidewards glimpse into their life and for many that method is prefered for anonymity.
My aim is to use the camera unconventionally, I also use a GoPro and an iPhone to record films and take pictures. Nothing is choreographed, everything is what is happeninng around me in relation to my film or photography work.
My installations, sculptures and paintings have developed out of subjects that have had an emotional, political or social impact on me or those around me over a number of years.
MY WORK
SNAPSHOTS OF SURVIVAL
Ongoing since 2013
Snapshots of survival is a set of work that is taken on my camera or my phone, this work takes it's own direction as it is of the everyday. Without planning, insight or research the situations will lead me to capture these shots.
KUWG LIFE
Ongoing since October 2015
As a member of Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group, I am an embedded artist, documenting actions. These include protests, meetings and support for benefit claimants and those facing hardship due to the UK's government austerity measures. Working with a basic canon DSLR, Go Pro Hero and an iphone I have managed to film interactions in the public eye and in our weekly meetings. The challenges are being unable to expose the members and to be aware of publics anonyminity.
OBJECTS OF REFLECTION AND REPRESENTATION
Ongoing since 2013
Sculptural work, is often related to my thoughts and gathered information and experiences within the context of social and political issues. Mostly exploring my emotions relating to individulas or my own life.
ABSENCE
Ongoing since 2015
Exploring the idea and impact of missing someone in your life and the relationship with an absent family member. What does the photo tell you? Can a viewer place themselves in the moment with the subjects. The emotion relating to absense in a childs life.
SOCIAL MEDIA AND LOCAL CAMPAIGNS INVOLVED WITH
Since 2014, I have been working with several social and political causes, first off was Breaking The Chains, in Plaistow Memorial Church, October 2014. Whilst with Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group so this has led me to help with the campaign for The Granville and The Carlton Vale Community Centre to stay open. Also, I help with the KUWG YouTube page and upload short films for them onto their YouTube site, the aim being that these are used and accessible for anyone seeking support locally so they can see what the group is all about. Also for other groups that to signpost, and research into what they are doing.
